Join the series to learn strategies for implementing the Planned Language Approach's (PLA) Big 5 for ALL. The PLA is a comprehensive, systemic, research-based way for Head Start and Early Head Start programs to ensure optimal language and literacy services for children who speak English and who are dual language learners (DLLs). Children need high-quality experiences in each of the Big 5: Background Knowledge; Oral Language and Vocabulary; Book Knowledge and Print Concepts; Alphabet Knowledge and Early Writing; and Phonological Awareness.

This fourth webinar in the five-part series focuses on Oral Language and Vocabulary. Children develop expressive and receptive language as they begin to understand a language’s meaning and can use sounds, words, and sentences. A key aspect of oral language development is acquiring vocabulary. Learn how to promote Oral Language and Vocabulary skills for all children in your programs.

Topics for the webinar include:

  • Research about oral language and vocabulary
  • The development trajectory for these skills in children ages birth to 5
  • Strategies to support oral language and vocabulary for children who are DLLs
  • Connections between oral language and vocabulary, PLA, and the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework

Target Audience

  • Head Start, Early Head Start, Migrant and Seasonal Head Start, and child care program leaders and education staff
  • Center-based, family child care, public pre-K, and home visiting programs
