December 2025 |  Monthly Newsletter from the Florida Head Start Association

As 2025 draws to a close, we pause to celebrate the progress we’ve made and the futures we continue to build together. This season reminds us of the strength found in community, the joy of shared milestones, and the promise of what lies ahead.

At the Florida Head Start Association, every achievement this year has been fueled by your dedication, whether through advocacy, partnership, or the daily work of supporting children and families. Your commitment ensures that our mission remains vibrant and impactful

Together, We Build Futures.

With this guiding vision, we look toward 2026 with renewed energy: expanding opportunities, strengthening programs, and amplifying the voices of those we serve.

Thank you for being part of this journey. May your holiday season be filled with peace, gratitude, and anticipation for the bright year to come.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s easy to focus all of our energy on caring for others. But for family services professionals and home visitors, self-care is not a luxury—it’s essential. Think of it as charging your own batteries so you have the strength, energy, and capacity to continue supporting children and families.

Self-care promotes and restores both psychological and physical health, creating a greater sense of well-being. Simple but effective practices—whether it’s taking a walk, setting aside quiet time, or connecting with supportive colleagues—can make a meaningful difference. When you invest in your own wellness, you benefit not only yourself, but also your program and the families you serve.

And remember: you are not alone. Program leaders and supervisors play an important role in promoting self-care and wellness in the workplace. Together, we can build a culture that values balance, resilience, and well-being.

This December, give yourself the gift of self-care. By nurturing your own health, you strengthen your ability to nurture others.

The recent federal government shutdown underscored Head Start’s critical role — and the urgent need for stable, increased funding. While the shutdown has ended, Congress and the President have not yet finalized funding for the full fiscal year 2026

Head Start programs depend on a deeply committed, yet underpaid and overextended workforce. Without stronger investment, the future of these essential services remains uncertain.

FHSA encourages you to urge Congress to strengthen and increase funding so every child and family can thrive.

Children's Week: Celebration of the Hands

As a Community Partner of Children’s Week, FHSA invites you to join us in creating hand artwork for next year’s Celebration of the Hands at the Capitol Rotunda. This inspiring display is a reminder that the future of our children rests in our hands.

With the 2026 theme, Building Blocks for Every Child, we encourage families and Head Start/Early Head Start programs to design handprints that reflect our shared commitment to strong foundations for Florida’s children.

Helpful reminders:

  • Connect hands with string, yarn, or ribbon (no individual hands).
  • Add a header at the top of your strand.
  • Package carefully and ensure embellishments are dry.
  • Mail completed artwork by February 6, 2026.

Together, let’s build a vibrant display that celebrates imagination, unity, and the power of community.

Head Start: A Model for Supporting Child & Family Mental Health

A recent article from the Center for American Progress highlights how Head Start programs provide critical mental health support for children and families, offering a model that strengthens resilience and well-being nationwide. The piece underscores Head Start’s unique role in integrating education, health, and family services to meet the needs of the whole child.

This resource reinforces why our advocacy matters: stable, increased funding is essential to sustain and expand Head Start’s impact.

The FHSA Dashboard: Your Tool for Advocacy

The Florida Head Start Association dashboard is a practical tool for advocacy, created to help inform policymakers and other state leaders about the critical role Head Start programs play in Florida—and the unmet need for additional funding.

We encourage all programs to take a moment to review their data on the dashboard to ensure its accuracy. Up-to-date and accurate information strengthens our collective voice and ensures your program is represented correctly in statewide advocacy efforts.

FHSA at Children's Week: Storybook Village

FHSA is proud to once again partner with the Florida Association for the Education of Young Children (FLAEYC) and the Florida Family Child Care Home Association, Inc. (FFCCHA) to host a booth in Storybook Village during this year’s Children’s Week.

Our featured book is Not a Box—a celebration of creativity and imagination. Thanks to the generous support of Gardner, 600 copies of the book will be shared with families. Discount School Supply has also provided boxes so each child visiting our booth can design their own imaginative creation.

We will provide Families with the materials they need and encourage them to take their projects home to continue the fun. A QR code will be included so families can upload photos of their child’s finished masterpiece—we can’t wait to see where their imagination takes them!

FHSA Member News

This holiday season, FHSA members across Florida came together to spread joy, kindness, and care for children and families. Here are just a few of the inspiring moments from our community:

Lutheran Services Florida and its community partners ensured families had a meaningful Thanksgiving. From staff hand-delivering dinner baskets to local companies donating gift cards, families were well cared for. These acts of compassion remind us of the heart behind Head Start—ensuring every family feels supported during the holidays.

At RCMA Mulberry Community Academy, students transformed their art class into a magical winter wonderland. No gloves or scarves were required, just creativity, laughter, and holiday spirit.

Erin Gallagher from the Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County brought storytime to life at the Hands on Learning Center, delighting children with a reading of Turkey Trouble before the holiday break.

Through her generous gift of ten new trikes, Milli Ricciardelli brightened the season for children at Children First, Inc. These trikes give children the freedom to explore, play, and grow—nurturing both hearts and minds.

4C Head Start, in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, distributed baskets filled with nutritious food to families at the Ferguson Child Development Center in Orlando. This gift of health and hope supported families during the Thanksgiving break.

Thanks to the generosity of local partners, families at You Thrive Florida Early Learning Programs in DeLeon Springs received Thanksgiving baskets that brought comfort and joy to their holiday tables.
