Familial and cultural beliefs about discipline influence the attitudes and feelings we develop as children and our approach to child-rearing when we become adults. There is also considerable evidence that families often pass on the belief in the effectiveness of punitive discipline strategies from one generation to another. Helping early childhood staff learn child behavior management practices to promote healthy development includes learning to use positive discipline strategies and manage personal reactions to children’s behavior in ways that may be different from their own familial and cultural beliefs. Best practices in early childhood education and the Head Start Program Performance Standards guides the conversation about how to effectively support children’s social and emotional development and prevent child maltreatment in early childhood programs.

This webinar is offered with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish.
